I believe that the goal of counseling is to help you to get to know yourself, especially the parts of you that have been neglected or wounded. I use Internal Family Systems therapy and Gestalt to help clients reconnect with fractured parts of themselves to heal trauma and feel whole again. I prefer these approaches because it can be hard to identify thoughts, feelings and emotions and these frameworks help greatly by having the client connect with them as different "parts". Often the root cause of emotional pain can be difficult to identify so I focus on developing a well-rounded case conceptualization of each client. This includes potential diagnoses, trauma/family history, lifestyle, medical history, and physical health. I believe once these conditions are identified it becomes much easier to manage symptoms.
